19th C. American Cherry Drop Leaf Gate Leg Dining Table, c 1840, rare in Carlsbad, California For Sale

This rare American Country Sheraton cherry drop-leaf dining table, circa xxxx, features gate legs that swing out to support the two leaves when fully opened.These versatile tables were the mainstay of American homes since the early 18th century. Made to be tucked against a wall, or used behind a sofa (modern era), when not in use, these tables provided ample space when either partially extended or fully extended. This piece has been in my family for well over 80 years, having been discovered by my antiquing mom in Wisconsin. It graced our living room as a sofa console table, and has been used though out my homes, from Hawaii to Nashville and California. The original lacquer finish is mostly intact, with heavy crackling. The leaves, when extended, show typical unevenness, due to the solid cherry construction. Open:49 1/2"Lx 48"w. Closed: 18 1/2" deep x 48" wide.
